Chart

Charlie's Hot 75 - December 22, 2016

The 1975's "Somebody Else" blasts from 10-1, displacing Shakira's "Chantaje" after 5 weeks (1-2). "Else", in the 7th week of its second chart run, took 30 weeks total to claim to top slot. That easily defeats the joint record for longest climb to No. 1, which was previously held by "Counting Stars" (OneRepublic) and "Under Control" (Calvin Harris and Hurts); each took 24 weeks. With the latter also reaching No. 1 in its second run, however, "Counting Stars" still holds the record for longest climb in a continuous chart run. "Somebody Else" is The 1975's first No. 1 hit and second visit to the top 5 ("The Sound"; No. 2); it previously peaked at No. 7.

As noted above, Shakira's "Chantaje" departs the penthouse after entering a three way tie for the title of second longest running No. 1 of 2016 (shared with "Into You" and "Perfect Illusion"; 5 weeks each). Despite dropping, five weeks still sets a record for the Columbian powerhouse; her only other No. 1, 2014's "Empire, managed four weeks at the top.

With The 1975's huge vault, two former No. 1s drop to new lows; "Starboy" exits the top 2 for the first time in its 13 week run (2-3) and Lady Gaga's "Perfect Illusion" dips out of the top 3 for the first time in its 15 week run (3-4).

Rounding out the top 5 is Bruno Mars' "24K Magic" (5-5). Spending a fifth straight week at No. 5, its peak to date, "Magic" is the only stable track in the top 10. Alessia Cara's "Scars to Your Beautiful" hops 8-6 to a new peak, on its way to becoming the singer's third straight top 5. Follow up singles "How Far I'll Go" (from Moana Soundtrack) and "Seventeen" (from her album Know-It-All) look to repeat the success of "Scars", "Wild Things" and "Here"; the former is into this week's top 40 while the latter is on the cusp of re-entering.

Meanwhile, MØ's solo breakthrough on my chart "Drum" slides 4-7. It previously peaked at No. 3 for a single week prior to Shakira's No. 1 run; it has spent 9 weeks in the top 10 to date.

Clean Bandit's "Rockabye" pushes 9-8, coming fairly close to the overall peak of their only other top 10 "Rather Be" (No. 4). "Rather Be", despite the 'low' peak, ended 2014 as the top track of the year. Will "Rockabye" dominate enough to land a top 10 year end finish in 2017? Only time will tell.

Closing the top 10, are Emeli Sandé's "Hurts" (6-9) and OneRepublic's "Kids" (7-10). With both down three slots and heavy competition nearing the region, this might be the last top 10 week for each.
