Chart

James' Top 40 - October 28, 2015

Notes:

  • "A Taste of Silver" notches its 15th week atop the chart. This might be the last week it sits on top, as next week there will finally be new challengers for #1.
  • The floodgates are now open, as this week saw a lot of movement around the whole chart. Definitely something the chart has been lacking for the better part of 2 months. The Top 4 was broken up, the Top 10 is starting to become anew, and there are some big gainers and fallers this week as well. Now the chart should start to get really interesting.
  • "Ain't No Stopping" climbs 5-4 this week for a new peak. This breaks apart the Top 4 that held together for an astounding 9 weeks, easily the most number of weeks a collection of songs have held in the same positions. This has a shot at #1 next week, but it might be leapfrogged by something below it.
  • SafetySuit scores a surprise Top 10 debut this week with "Looking Up" coming in at #7. The reason this comes as a big surprise was because SafetySuit released this unexpectedly on Friday, and I wasn't expecting it for another month or so. The downfall for this is that it doesn't debut at #1, nor does it debut in the Top 5, which is a lot lower than I was expecting for the song. When I first heard it, I was a little disappointed, but it has gradually grown on me, and now I really like it. It debuts with 45 plays under its belt, and not even in a full week, which is a good number. This has a big shot at #1 next week, and easily has the best odds of the few songs that could get it.
  • Andrew Watt continues his slayage over the past couple of weeks as "Seeing Red" takes another big jump this week, going 16-8 for a new peak. It has gone up by increments of 8 positions each week since its debut, and should continue to look forward. Top 5 might be out of reach next week, but #6 looks like a good number. "Ghost In My Head" climbs 30-28 for a new peak. This has been gaining slowly since it debuted and should continue to do so for awhile.
  • "Revolution Indifference" falls just short of the Top 10, as it moves a nice 17-11 jump for a new peak. Top 10 is a lock next week, and beyond that is looking good.
  • DNCE almost had a huge week this week. "Cake By The Ocean" takes a 22-15 leap for a new peak. This looks to be headed for the Top 10 in a few weeks. It really benefitted from their debut EP, SWAAY, being released this week. The other three tracks on the EP appear in the Top 4 on On the Rise and all narrowly missed out on debuts because of the three this week. Next week could see some or all of them debut.
  • Hedley takes a big leap this week with "Hello", tied for second biggest in chart history, as it climbs 20 positions from #39 to #19 for a new peak. This has 40 plays in just two weeks and this is looking to be a big hit for them, and potentially their highest charting hit. The song probably should have debuted a bit higher last week, but it was weighed down a bit. #1 is definitely in the picture for this in the future, as many songs are starting to come together.
  • "Your Type" enters the Top 30 in its second week, as it lifts 34-30 for a new peak. Carly Rae Jepsen now owns two songs in the Top 30, as this and "Run Away With Me" (25-23), are both here. Both are looking like Top 20 hits, with the latter looking like a possible Top 10.
  • The previous queen of the chart makes her return as Adele debuts at #33 with "Hello". Before Tove Lo, Adele held records on the chart for best female artist on the chart, but she will be looking to take back her reign. This was actually much lower debut than I anticipated for the track. I love it, but it hasn't been a repeat button masher just yet. As this is debuting in everyone else's Top 10s, this'll be gaining its way into it a little slower. This definitely has Top 10 written on it, but #1 is not in the picture for the time being.
  • Now that there are two songs with the title "Hello" (first time the title even charted), I'll be referring to them in my old way where I used to put the song and artist in the chart notes.
  • Justin Bieber also skips On the Rise, as did SafetySuit and Adele, and debuts at #34 with "Sorry". This might actually outpace "Hello" by: Adele for a little while, as I am really into this. Top 10 is definitely obtainable for the track. "What Do You Mean?" wasn't able to do much, as it only scored two weeks on On the Rise with nothing to show for it. This is Justin's fifth entry, as he charted all with his Believe era, as "Boyfriend" peaked at #17, "All Around the World" peaked at #4, "As Long As You Love Me" peaked at #7, and "Beauty and a Beat" peaked at #8.
  • The final debut belongs to current chart kings Until the Ribbon Breaks, but with a different look. "Don't Leave 2.0" debuts at #39 this week. Until the Ribbon Breaks is credited as the remixers on the track despite them doing vocals as well as production (it's more of a cover), but the real charting artist is Faithless. "Don't Leave" is a remake of their song from the 90s. This has the potential to do well, but it might get lost within all of the debuts that are going to be occurring soon. Until the Ribbon Breaks also score yet another song on On the Rise, as "We Had A Conversation" pops up this week. This could be the perfect song to replace "Perspective" (29-36) since it also features Homeboy Sandman, as that is looking to fall next week or in 2 weeks, but it might not be able to make the chart. The next single hasn't been chosen yet, but I'll be making my official pick soon. Actually, there's another UTRB song on On the Rise, sort of, as Pete Lawrie (the lead singer) puts "In the End" on this week. I discovered his solo music this week, but that seems like it could be the only one to chart. It's from 2011, so it's a bit older, but new to me.
  • This week finally sees big activity in the chart, as some songs take big leaps ("Seeing Red", "Revolution Indifference", "Cake By The Ocean", "Hello"), but some songs take big hits ("Cut the Cord" (9-14), "The Hills" (11-17), "Could Have Been Me" (14-18), "Mountain At My Gates" (13-20), "It's You" (19-24), "Yin Yang" (21-26), and "R.I.P. 2 My Youth (18-27), "Hotline Bling" (31-38)). All were doing fine up until now, but all of them probably are done. "Could Have Been Me" and "It's You" could both rebound, but the others are probably going to start falling quite a bit.
