James' Top 70 - February 23, 2017

5 debuts!

Notes:

  • "29" sticks at #1 for its third consecutive week. It's been pretty much going strong without much competition below it. Next week could see a new #1 as "Diagram of a Simple Man" (3-3) will be aided by the release of Colliding By Design. Spoiler: album tracks should seep in from the album, as it is outstanding.
  • Urban Cone is looking like the most fierce competitor for a future #1 soon, as "Old School" blasts 11-6 for a new peak. This has been coming up fast since its debut and next week should see it slot in the Top 3. I could see it going #1 in a few weeks.
  • The Hunna score a Top 10 this week with "Bonfire" moving up 12-10. This more got in due to low competition in the latter half of the Top 10. This should peak somewhere in the 7-10 range in the end.
  • "Red Hot Lights" randomly breaks out this week by moving up 43-28 for a new peak. It set a peak of #40 7 weeks ago, and was in that position for 3 different weeks, but couldn't pass it. I got into a Moon Taxi fever this week, and this benefitted highly. This might just be the breakout it needed.
  • The top debut this week goes to TOTEM, as his new single "Up & Down" debuts at #55. I felt bad dropping "Bubblegum" (39-44) awhile back, and was thinking of trying to get it out of its rut, but the new single release made it easier to let it go. I just kinda stopped listening to it after it peaked at #10. I assumed it'd turn into a Top 5 peak, but it hit a brick wall right there. This should have a similar ride that "Bubblegum", but hopefully with a better end result.
  • American Authors make a return to the chart this week with "I'm Born to Run" coming in at #64. It spent 4 weeks on On the Rise, but it got in this week with the easier charting week. I can see this doing decent, maybe a peak in the Top 40. They've seen the chart once with "Best Day of My Life" (which I can't stand anymore lol), which peaked at #18 for a week. "Believer" hit On the Rise, but never charted.
  • I never thought I'd chart two Judah & The Lion songs, let alone just one, as their new single "Suit and Jacket" debuts this week at #65. This one is a lot better in quality than "Take It All Back" (#65), which just fell off the chart last week, so I see this one doing much better. I don't see it lighting up the charts, but a Top 50 peak is attainable.
  • Sturgill Simpson makes his chart debut with "Keep It Between the Lines" at #68. This also spent 4 weeks on On the Rise, and the slow week helps it. Now that it has finally debuted, I see this still sticking around. This could be a very slow riser, but it does have potential to do well.
  • One song that really benefitted from the slow week was "Goodbye", which debuts at #70 with barely any action this week lol. I more charted it because I wanted a return for Mat Kearney. I'm not sure if this will survive next week, but this could do well if I start to listen to it more.
  • Don't let On the Rise fool you this week: next week should be loaded with debuts. Acceptance should debut (and re-enter "Haunted") a few tracks, while new releases from Seether, Calvin Harris and Jason Derulo are imminent. I might be charting a new Dirty Heads song too as well.
