This week is all about one guy - Trevor Dahl. I'm sure most of you will see the name and it won't mean a thing, but he's actually locked out the top 2 this week! His solo track When You Come Home has debuted at #1 thanks to me discovering it this week, 2 years after its release. After releasing this song, Trevor became a member of Cheat Codes, for whom he provides vocals, and has scored two UK top 40 hits. The first of those songs, #9 hit Sex, didn't make my chart - interestingly I find the vocals quite weak alongside some 'run of the mill' production. It's the opposite with the follow-up Let Me Hold You (Turn Me On), a rework of Kevin Lyttle's 2003 hit, where the vocals take centre stage for me, as well as much better production throughout. Let Me Hold You debuts at #2 this week, not far behind When You Come Home in fact, although both songs were miles ahead of the competition.
This marks the first all-new top 2 since Fifth Harmony's All In My Head (Flex) and Clean Bandit's Tears debuted at #1 and #2 respectively in May, and it is technically the first time an artist has had two songs in the top 2 since Conrad Sewell had Hold Me Up at #1 and Start Again at #2 in June 2015. Also of note, three artists called Trevor have ever made my chart, one of the others being Trevor Moran who scored a #1 with Let's Roll in the first week of this year (and despite a minor #17 hit with I Wanna Fly that week, he's become a one-hit wonder with follow-up singles not being very good). The third and final one is Trevor Guthrie, who scored a top 20 hit as a feature on Armin van Buuren's This Is What It Feels Like in 2013.
In another busy week for singles, we also see a massive climb up to #3, pushing last week's #1 from Ariana Grande down to #4 (despite what would be an increase in sales if I measured that kinda thing). Tom Odell's cover of Cyndi Lauper's True Colours, recorded for the Sony Bravia 4K advert, is up a massive 24 places this week to give Tom his 8th top 10 hit and his 6th top 3 hit. It is one of two Cyndi Lauper covers currently in my chart, alongside Ben Weighill's Time After Time which reached #10 two weeks ago.
Also making a big climb this week is Niall Horan with his debut single This Town. Already he has achieved the highest charting solo 1D single, with ZAYN's PILLOWTALK charting at #6 earlier this year and failing to chart with either LIKE I WOULD or Snakehips collaboration Cruel. As part of One Direction, Niall achieved 11 #1 singles, which is the current record for most #1s by any artist, and Zayn was part of the group for 9 of those #1s before leaving in 2015.
Elsewhere, Daniel Skye scores his third top 10 hit as Good As It Gets climbs 10 places to #6, almost swapping with previous hit Smile which sinks 5-14 after 6 weeks of climbs. Zara Larsson re-enters the top 10 with Ain't My Fault, which climbs 22-8, a new peak. It's now her joint third highest peak, tied with Girls Like and behind #3 hit Lush Life and chart-topper Never Forget You.
Also reaching new peaks this week are Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya (33-18) and Kiss Myself by G.R.L. (40-28). #18 marks a new peak for Daya as a lead artist, although she has a #5 hit from her featured credit on The Chainsmokers' Don't Let Me Down. Funnily enough, she ends up one place ahead of the new Chainsmokers track this week, as All We Know debuts at #19, giving featured artist Phoebe Ryan her very first hit in my chart. It also debuts one place ahead of the transatlantic #1 Closer, which debuted and peaked at #20.
Other new entries this week: Everythang by Benjamin Lasnier (#23), Trust Nobody by Cashmere Cat feat. Selena Gomez & Tory Lanez (#28), Love On Me by Galantis & Hook N Sling (#33) and Body Moves by DNCE (#40). Cashmere Cat, Tory Lanez, Galantis and Hook N Sling all make their chart debuts this week.
