Britney Spears earns herself a fourth week at Number 1 with ...Baby One More Time. The single is speedily becoming a global phenomenon, topping almost every worldwide chart it enters. Most notably, the single topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Charts. The hit single continues to face competition from 2Pac with Changes, who now enters a second week in the second position. Britney Spears does manage to hold her position easily, as she is aided by her controversial music video.
B*Witched enter the Top 10 with Blame It On The Weatherman. The Irish girl group has already made a lasting impact in the United Kingdom, where they became the first and only girl group to have all their first four singles debut at Number 1. Not even the Spice Girls managed that feat. B*Witched has had success on this list, scoring a big chart-topper with C’est La Vie. The follow-up singles Rollercoaster and To You I Belong became Top 10-hits. The new Blame It On The Weatherman is the girls’ fourth consecutive Top 10-hit on this list, peaking at Number 6 this week.
The Vengaboys score the highest debut of the week. The Dutch group has already scored big hits on this list before, scoring a Number 1-hit with Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! last year. The song became a huge success in the Netherlands and made the Vengaboys a household name. The Vengaboys have also started releasing singles internationally, possibly becoming a global hit. The Vengaboys now score the highest debut with We're Going to Ibiza! The catchy summer song enters at Number 25.
Toy-Box receive a Gold Certification for Tarzan & Jane. The single became the first Danish hit since Whigfield topped the charts in 1995 with Think of You. Toy-Box their hit, which followed the success of Disney’s “Tarzan”, spent one week at Number 1 before they lost their crown to Britney Spears. Toy-Box announced more singles would follow, as Tarzan & Jane has become a commercial success worldwide. On this list, the chart-topper has amassed over 40,000 points.
Acda en de Munnik receive a Platinum Certification for Het Regent Zonnestralen. The Dutch duo has already had success on this list before, most notably with Niet of Nooit Geweest but their newest release has proven to be their bigger success. On this list, the single became their second song to peak at Number 2. The single got stuck behind Goodbye by the Spice Girls. As of this week, Acda en de Munnik their hopeful hit has amassed over 65,000 points.
1998 was a tough year for Spice Girls fans. Geri Halliwell left the group and it was unsure if the girls would continue without the beloved Ginger Spice. Luckily, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Victoria Adams and Melanie Chisholm decided to release on last single for the fans. This was Goodbye, which went on to become another million-selling hit across the globe. On this list, the single became the girls’ tenth Number 1-hit and spent seven consecutive weeks above the charts. The single is, so far, the best-scoring single of 1999. As of this week, Goodbye scored 100,000 points, certifying the chart-topper 3 x Platinum. The single is the Spice Girls’ seventh single to receive a 3 x Platinum.
