Geri Halliwell debuts at Number 1 with huge opening numbers after her exit from the Spice Girls

On the 31st of 1998, Geri Halliwell shook the world as she announced she left the Spice Girls. It was a pop tragedy that made headlines worldwide. With the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell became one of the top-sellers of the 90s and one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. On this list, the Spice Girls have had their fair share of hits. As a member of the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell topped the charts nine times. Their best-scoring single remains to be Wannabe with 190,000 points. After Geri Halliwell left the group, bandmembers Melanie Brown, Victoria Adams, Emma Bunton and Melanie C continued as the Spice Girls and scored a Number 1-hit with Goodbye.

Geri Halliwell now makes her debut as a solo artist with Look At Me, saying goodbye to Ginger Spice. The song is met with high anticipation and led to a closely followed chart battle in the United Kingdom. On this list, Geri Halliwell debuts at Number 1 with Look At Me. She is the second (ex-)member of the Spice Girls to score a solo chart-topper, following Melanie C’s When You’re Gone earlier this year. Geri Halliwell dethrones No Scrubs by TLC, which spent two weeks above the list.

Shania Twain steps into the Top 10 with That Don’t Impress Me Much. The Canadian singer has had an hugely successful year with her album “Come On Over”, which sold millions worldwide. The album launched two Top 10-singles on this list, being the chart-topper You’re Still the One and From This Moment On. Shania Twain now adds a third Top 10-entry to her resume, so far having all her releases reaching the Top 10. Other artists who can claim that feat are the Spice Girls and B*Witched. Shania Twain her newest That Don’t Impress Me Much peaks at Number 10 this week.

Westlife score the highest debut of the week. Westlife is a new, up-and-coming boy band from Ireland. Ireland has been very successful lately, as the country spawned the successes Boyzone and B*Witched. Westlife was formed by Louis Walsh, a manager who is the mastermind behind many UK-acts. Westlife releases Swear It Again as their debut single, which already was a big Number 1-hit in the United Kingdom. Westlife debuts at Number 21 on this list, off to a strong start.

Although DJ Jean misses out on the top spot this week, the Dutch disc jockey receives a Gold Certification for The Launch this week. The single is already an international success single in many European countries, especially in Germany and the Netherlands. On this list, the song hit Number 2, now peaking behind Geri Halliwell her first solo single. As of this week, the song has amassed over 40,000 points.
