The Spice Girls and Will Smith remain in locked position to fight for Number 1

The Spice Girls and Will Smith go head to head for this week’s race towards the Number 1. The all-conquering Spice Girls seize the throne for a fifth consecutive week with Goodbye. The girls are aided by huge international success and the media buzz surrounding the departure of Geri Halliwell. Will Smith subsequently enters a second consecutive week in the second place with Miami. His single could become his second Number 1-hit following Men In Black which topped the charts midway 1997. He is close to dethroning the Spice Girls, maybe next week could turn the tables.

Last year was crazily successful for the Irish boy group Boyzone. The boys finally achieved their first chart-topper with No Matter What, which went on to spend five weeks above the list and amassed over 90,000 points. The group now enter the Top 10 with the follow-up single I Love the Way You Love Me. The single marks the boys’ eleventh release to reach the Top 10. The hit single further solidifies the group’s record for act with the most Top 10s.

Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis enters the Top 10 with Het Avontuur (Vlieg Met Me Mee), the lead single of the epic film “Abeltje”. The single is Trijntje Oosterhuis her first solo release since her duet Wereld Zonder Jou alongside Marco Borsato. That single became a massive Number 1-hit and scored over 90,000 points. Trijntje Oosterhuis originally was one half of the pop group Total Touch, with whom she scored the Top 10-singles Somebody Else’s Lover and Touch Me There. Trijntje Oosterhuis her solo endeavor proves to be fruitful so far, peaking at Number 10 this week with Het Avontuur (Vlieg Met Me Mee).

Bryan Adams and Spice Girl Melanie C score the highest debut of the week. The duo collaborate on When You’re Gone, which marks Melanie C her first ever solo project aside from the Spice Girls. With the Spice Girls, “Sporty Spice” scored ten consecutive Number 1-hits and amassed over 1.000,000 points. Their debut hit single Wannabe is the best-scoring single of all time. Melanie C is not the first Spice Girl to release a solo single, Melanie Brown preceded her with I Want You Back.

Bryan Adams is not to be overlooked though, as he has scored a big-scorer as well. His single Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? became a massive Top 10-hit for the Canadian singer-songwriter and holds as one of the 90’s best-scoring releases. His albums have fared very well too, selling millions worldwide. His most iconic single has to be Summer of ’69, which is dubbed as one of the best singles of all time. The pop legends Bryan Adams and Melanie C now enter with the powerhouse hit When You’re Gone, debuting at Number 15 this week.
