The Spice Girls remain unstoppable at Number 1 for a twentieth week

The Spice Girls remain at Number 1 for a twentieth consecutive week. They spent ten weeks at the top with Wannabe, six weeks above the list with Say You’ll Be There and now a fourth week at the peak with 2 Become 1. Since the girls’ 2 Become 1 now has scored 40,000 points, the single celebrates a Gold Certification. The song is now the fastest song in history to reach a Gold status, doing it in only four weeks. The Spice Girls share their achievement with Whigfield, who also reached Gold within four weeks in January 1995 with Saturday Night.

The Spice Girls reach another spectacular feat as Wannabe becomes the third-most successful of all time. The song has racked up over 134,000 points, outscoring big songs such as Per Spoor (Kedeng Kedeng) by Guus Meeuwis and Vagant. The song is now the best-scoring song by a female act ever, outscoring Think Twice by Céline Dion. Wannabe is still charting successfully and can become the best-scoring single of all time. That record is currently held by Het Is Een Nacht by Guus Meeuwis and Vagant.

Meanwhile in the Top 10, Mariah Carey scores her fifth Top 10-hit. The American vocalist has signed two Number 1s to her name, being One Sweet Day with Boyz II Men and the single Fantasy. Her other notable big hits include the Christmas-smasher All I Want For Christmas and Emotions. Her newest effort Forever reaches Number 10 this week.

Saying that Macarena was a big hit last summer would be an understatement. The single topped the charts in multiple countries and sold millions worldwide. On this list, the song peaked at Number 1 for two weeks and was certified Platinum. The song was the eighth best-scoring single of 1996. On the radio, the song was hugely overplayed and the signature dance linked to the Macarena  made the hit a global phenomenon. As a reaction, hardcore-producer MC Rage releases a disstrack to the song named Fuck Macarena. He clearly wasn’t a big fan of the track. The single debuts at Number 13 this week.
