The Spice Girls score their fifth, record-breaking Number 1

The Spice Girls stike again. After reigning the list with Who Do You Think You Are for seven weeks, the girls dethrone themselves with Mama. This is the third time the girl group dethrone themselves; on November 8th 1996 Say You’ll Be There knocked Wannabe off the top and on December 20th 2 Become 1 had beaten Say You’ll Be There. The heartfelt Mama is the Spice Girls’ fifth Number 1-single, officially making them the act with the Most Number 1s on the list. The record was previously held by Céline Dion with four Number 1s. In total, the girls have spent twenty-nine weeks above the list, also more than any other act. The Spice Girls are truly a force to be reckoned with.

Robbie Williams scores his second Top 10-entry with Old Before I Die. In total, this Williams’s his fourth Top 10-entry, also counting his entrances as a member of the popular boy group Take That. With the band, the English singer scored big hits such as Back for Good. As a solo-artist, Robbie Williams scored a Number 1-hit with Freedom midway 1996. His newest single peaks at Number 8 this week.

Gala scores her second Top 10-entry with Let a Boy Cry. The Italian singer-songwriter scored a massive hit with Freed from Desire earlier this year. The single peaked at Number 2 and was Gold with over 59,000 points. Internationally, the song was a success as well. Gala returns with a more sensitive song, peaking at Number 10 this week.

Ginuwine scores the highest debut of the week. The American R&B-rapper has not entered the list before, making the catchy Pony his debut hit. Ginuwine was a member of Swing Mob, a R&B/hip hop collective housing successful artists. As a solo-artist, Ginuwine has released a number of multi-platinum and platinum-selling albums and singles. His newest single debuts at Number 22 this week.

Mark Owen makes his solo-debut on the list. The English singer-songwriter was a member of the highly successful boy group Take That, of which Robbie Williams also was a member. The group disbanded midway 1996 due to personal reasons. With the group, Mark Owen scored two Number 1s, being the 3 x Platinum-certified Back for Good and the Platinum-certified How Deep Is Your Love. Mark Owen is not the first member of Take That to go solo; Robbie Williams currently sits in the Top 10 with his newest effort and lead-singer Gary Barlow peaked at Number 2 with Forever Love last year. Mark Owen his new sound is nothing like his work in Take That and a clear departure of his boyband-history. His Child debuts at Number 40 this week.
