Effervescence - March 14th, 2024

Welcome along back to Effervescence!

Noteworthy cultural notes for this week:

  • The Eurovision Song Contest field is almost complete. we're at 36 of the 37 entrants. Get your act together Azerbaijan!
  • It's Comic Relief on Friday, March 15th
  • It's St. Patrick's Day on Sunday, March 17th. Sláinte!
  • Legendary singer Eric Carmen passed away on March 11th at the age of 74
  • I'm a little late on this one. I knew the story of Cat Janice but I missed that she had passed. Janice sadly lost her battle with illness on February 28th at the age of 31. So, one last Hurrah for 'Dance You Outta My Head'. I was also unaware that she lived very close to me geographically. RIP.

Hey Maxon! :)

Glad to see a big jump for 'Never Be Lonely' (I prefer the Cascada remix!), but what's with the debut for 'Zombie'? Not complaining about it either way.

I'm also liking the re-entry for 'Dance You Outta My Head'!

Good chart yet again.

Take care!

Ahoy, Piran!

'Doomsday Blue', 'Birds in the Sky', 'Zombie', 'Drunken Sailor', 'Whiskey in the Jar', 'Fields of Athenry', and 'Tell Me Ma' may all have gotten a strong rub due to upcoming St. Patrick's Day festivities and perhaps a shot or two too to wash it down?

I like the new Cascada remix of 'Never Be Lonely' too, though I probably still prefer the original. Either way, I like to credit the same entry for the added listens and I'm always partial to a bit of Jax Jones in the Top 10. I do enjoy 'Never Be Lonely' being sandwiched right up next to 'Never Be Alone'. There's something in the dance song writing water!

Thank you so much for stopping by and the comment!

Ahoy, Maxon! 👋

Wow, your charts amaze me over and over again!

Yeah, the Eurovision Song Contest has a very big impact, but I haven't seen your leader on European charts yet. Also, I haven't seen #3 "When I'm Gone" too.

Glat to see the highest debut #10 "Birds in the Sky". I guess that you found it on Official UK Singles Chart. I found this song on European charts a few weeks ago.

#15 "Zombie", uh… I was not born yet when it became the greatest world hit, but I'm very tired of this song. I like this melody, but I don't like the original arrangement. When I was a little boy, I was a big fan of Dolores O'Riordan. My first favourite single of her was "Ordinary Day", released in 2007. In this year, I watched her live performance in Chile. So, this live version of "Zombie" became a very perfect to me!
P.S. To me, she is the greatest songwriter, not just a singer.

#22 "All By Myself", support this original version, but Celine Dion cover version sounds good to. The songwriters always sing their songs better.

#38 "Bulletproof", yeah yeah yeah, it's done!!! 🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊
Wishing to see on the leader position! 🏆🏆🏆
I hope, you will support your fellow citizen. Are you American, or am I mistaken?

Also, glad to see an existing tracks: #5 "Never Be Alone"; #7 "Rim Tim Tagi Dim"; #8 "Beat of Your Heart"; #9 "Make You Mine"; #13 "Love Hurt Repeat"; #16 "Dizzy"; #19 "Lonely Dancers" (I found it on European chart only this week); #21 "Waking Up"; #30 "Lovers in a Past Life"; #32 "Unforgettable" (I remember these boys when they sang in Norwegian, but now they sing only in English… Sad); #35 "Fighter".

Sorry for a very long message… You just know how to surprise! 😄

Good luck and have a good mood! 🤝

Ahoy, Alex!

You often give me a lot to sift through but I enjoy the interaction!

With whether or not the music I chart has a big impact on National and continental charts is of little import to me. If I like something, I will reflect that by charting it. I actually find I can end up listening to and charting tracks I don't end up liking just because they are big in the zeitgeist. 'We Will Rave' is right up my street both literally and nostalgically. It is definitely my top Eurovision entry this year at the mo'. 'When You're Gone' was released this past week. It was a part of the Swedish 'Melodifestivalen' which is their national competition to find their Eurovision entry. It didn't do particularly well (7th) but likely much because it went on first out of the 12 finalists. I feel Sweden are saving Maria Sur for a later contest to be their representative. She could be a future winner. I love 'When You're Gone' though and think it would a bit like a perfect successor to last year's 'Tattoo'. Though I do not think sending a song in the same vein would necessarily be a good thing. Maria Sur is 18, fled Ukraine in 2020 and this was her second successive attempt at representing Sweden. I bet you love the fact she's Ukrainian, lives in Sweden but sings her song in, you guessed it, English! Haha.

I originally saw 'Bird's in the Sky' in The Official Chart (UK) as you said but also in the Irish chart and, like yourself, a few weeks ago. It charted this week for me rather than a few weeks back as previously I just had it 'bubbling'. The breakthrough was because I am a pop culture goofball so had plenty of Irish artists and Irish music playing this week as it's St. Patrick's Day on Sunday. I like to cheeseball it up for any excuse I can to add a bit of fun and variety to my playlists and charts. At the moment, it feels like every week has a bunch of throwbacks/classics but I promise that is not always the case.

I love your story about 'Zombie', it is fun to see how despite it being older than you you still very much connected to it even in an alternative take than the largely popular original version.

'All By Myself' charted due to Eric Carmen's death. I like to send a salute to our fallen greats by charting their biggest hits in an acknowledgement of past greatness. This track sounds jarringly out of place when I listen to the tracks from this week's Effervescence playlist but I don't care. Like you said, the originals are 9 times out of 10 better than the originals band this song is no exception.

'Bulletproof' finally made it! now to see how much of a heater it can be as it begins its journey. I have no idea how long that journey may be nor when it will fizzle out. I guess I gave away my geographical location in my comment about Cat Janice in my description this week? If it wasn't that, I'd love to know what it was. I am not American, I'm English but I live in Virginia so you're sort of correct.

I will endeavor to continue to surprise you!

Thank you for to comment and the interest as always. Have a great weekend!

Hi there Maxon!

Nice to see "Never Be Lonely" and "Make You Mine" in the top 10. I also like the new peaks for "Lonely Dancers" and "Waking Up" and I'm glad to see a return for "Dance You Outta My Head" and the debuts for "We Can't Be Friends", "Zombie", "All By Myself" and of course, "Simple Life".

Now, as for the Eurovision entries, I do want to distance myself from them until the Event itself, so I can get a fresh start for it (even if I heard "La Noia", "Dizzy" and of course, "Always On The Run" (my country's entry) before).

Great chart!
Take care.

Hello, Sergej!

Happy New Week to you.

You know, its going to cause confusion but with the upcoming fresh chart on Thursday just around the corner, it appears Zombie will actually retain a place on the 40 as its one of my lady's favorites, it might even climb! There are going to be a lot of fun random entries again.

As for the entrants to the Eurovision Song Contest, I have become a bit of an ESC nerd over the last few years. I'm a European living in the States so I tend to gravitate to the British and European eccentricities that the majority of my American circle are not aware of. I organize a party at a Bar/Restaurant for a European Meetup group I run and Eurovision is normally one of the most attended events on our calendar. Naturally, as I integrate myself more into the Eurovision community and culture, I dig a little deeper with each passing year to the point where I watched several of the national competitions over the previous few weeks. It is not only the winners and Eurovision entries that I have enjoyed but several others that I have been able to chart here too. I also enjoy listening to all the entrants as they are announced/win their national final and add them to my playlist then and there to play throughout the season. I enjoy getting into them to the point that I practically know everything about them by the point we reach Eurovision week. I can see the consensus of the two or three folks I follow most closely on here tend to do what you do and segregate the Eurovision tracks until the competition itself. I guess I understand though to me, music is music and if it's available it's fair game, and if some tracks end up taking unnatural jumps and falls around Eurovision then so be it. Each to their own. I entirely get it to think,of the songs in their own bubble and not to suddenly feel you have to consider 37 extra songs in an already packed field. I'm rambling so I will stop it there.

Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting. Best of luck to you in your employment quests.

Have a wonderful week!
