KT TUNSTALL spends an eighth week at No. 1 on the ShufflePlay 40 with “Maybe That’s A Good Thing.” The song is now the longest running No. 1 in nearly two years.
As was mentioned last week, the last song to spend at least eight weeks at No. 1 was “Bungalow” by SCOTT HELMAN, who held the top of the chart for 13 weeks in 2014-15.
TUNSTALL is the first woman to spend 8 weeks at No. 1 since LADY GAGA held it for 8 weeks back “Applause” in 2013. TUNSTALL is also the first woman other than LADY GAGA to spend 8 weeks at No. 1 this decade.
“Maybe It’s A Good Thing” is the eighth song in the 2010s to spend at least 8 weeks on top of the chart. The others are the aforementioned “Applause” (8 weeks/2013); “Carry On” by FUN. (8 weeks/2012); “Born This Way” by LADY GAGA (9 weeks/2011); “Bungalow” by SCOTT HELMAN (13 weeks/2014-15); “The Edge Of Glory” by LADY GAGA (14 weeks/2011); “Telephone” by LADY GAGA and BEYONCE (15 weeks/2010); and “Fortune” by WILLIAM FITZSIMMONS (19 weeks/2014). By comparison, six years into the 2000s, only seven songs had lasted eight weeks or more on top.
This week at No. 1 marks KT TUNSTALL’s 39th week in total on top of the chart across her eight No. 1s, starting with “Black Horse And The Cherry Tree” in 2005. That puts her alone in third place among artists with the most cumulative weeks at No. 1, with CHANTAL KREVIAZUK (66 weeks) and LADY GAGA (75 weeks) ahead of her.
Spending a sixth week at No. 2 - which is 100 per cent of its chart run so far - is LADY GAGA with “Million Reasons.” Should the track, which is GAGA’s official second single from “Joanne,” peak at No. 2, it will go down as one of the longest running No. 2 songs to never reach the top. GAGA joins other six-week-at-No. 2 peakers RAY LAMONTAGNE who spent six weeks in the runner-up position in 2014 with “Supernova.” Ten years prior to that, JASON MRAZ did it was “You And I Both.”
Four songs have spent more time peaked at No. 2. DRAGONETTE and OUTKAST both lasted seven weeks there with “Pick Up The Phone” and “Hey Ya” respectively, while the record for longest time peaking at No. 2 goes to SERENA RYDER for “Little Bit Of Red” in 2008 and ADELE with “Someone Like You,” both of which spent eight weeks there.
YEARS & YEARS hang in at No. 3 with their sixth Top 5 hit “Meteorite.” TEGAN & SARA holds at No. 4 with “Stop Desire”, after peaking at No. 3 several weeks back, thus giving their album “Love You To Death” so far a No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 hit - in that order, and rounding out the Top 5 are the CHAINSMOKERS featuring HALSEY with “Closer.”
