2018 begins with a new champion as Justin Timberlake's "Filthy" ends Gomez' and Marshmello's 10-week reign.
Possibly the most unexpected number 1 hit yet? Justin Timberlake made his big return to music on Friday, and he certainly made an impact. "Filthy" debuts straight in at number 1. The first song to topple Selena Gomez and Marshmello's "Wolves" since Taylor Swift's "This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" in November. It was a close race between "Filthy", "Wolves", "Finesse (Remix" and "For You" for the top spot but it was the JT who came out on top. His album debut's next month and after a strong debut with "Filthy", should we be expecting another chart domination a la Taylor Swift?
Gomez and Marshmello might have to settle for second place this week but sliding one place to #2, the lowest position the song has held in 12 weeks, is a remarkable achievement. The longevity of "Wolves" post-#1 will be interesting. Will it join "Bad Liar" and "It Ain't Me" in the 30-week+ club? This week wasn't so great for Gomez, she lost the chart crown, and "Bad Liar" is this week's biggest faller, dropping 9 places to #20. This marks the song's 33rd non-consecutive week on the chart.
This chart was very competitive with quite a few big new releases. Bruno Mars released a remix of "Finesse" with Cardi B- everything that woman touches at the moment seems to turn to gold as the song debuts at #3 - the highest peak for either artist. There's no denying that this was certainly Cardi B's impact and "Finesse" may never have even entered the chart without her involvement. Close behind is Liam Payne and Rita Ora with "For You", the "Fifty Shades Freed" single enters at #4. Last year's "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" peaked at #5 and went on to spend 7 weeks on the chart. If that is anything to go by, "For You" will likely have a promising future on the chart. Finally, "One Foot" by WALK THE MOON debuts at #5. WALK THE MOON haven't had a hit since "Shut Up and Dance" so a top 5 entry in 2018 is a great achievement.
Most of the tracks that remain from last week took a tumble this week. "I Miss You" by Clean Bandit, and Julia Michaels slips 2 spots away from its peak of #4 to #6. The song has now spent 5 weeks on the chart, officially certified as a hit. "Beautiful Trauma" by P!nk falls 5 places to #8 and has now spent 7 weeks charting. "Anywhere" by Rita Ora dives 7 places to #9- last week we were wondering if the song would hit #1, this week we're asking if it'll last much longer in the top 10.
Taylor Swift has just two songs on the chart, the lowest amount of charting Swift songs in months. "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" continues to be the stand-out non-single track, despite falling 5 places to #10. However, tables seem to be turning for "...Ready for It?" which surprisingly climbs 3 places to #7. The song has now spent 13 weeks on the chart, 8 of those outside of the top 10.
Songs from "The Greatest Showman" proved to have some longevity as "Rewrite the Stars" and "The Other Side" still feature on the chart, sitting at #11 and #13 respectively, both down 4 spaces. It's had legs at the box office, and its performance on the chart seems similar.
Camila Cabello gets her own section despite only having one song on the chart this week. "Never Be the Same" falls 4 places to #12. The song has now charted for 6 weeks. Next week, Cabello's debut album "Camila" will impact the chart and from early listens, some of the tracks are highly likely to debut next week.
The highest new entry outside of the top 10 comes from Guy Sebastian with "Bloodstone". The song starts at #14. Typically, it's unusual for male artists to have a prolonged chart life. Will "Bloodstone" break the mould? The other new entry comes from David Guetta, Afrojack, Charli XCX and French Montana with "Dirty Sexy Money". This song has been out for a few weeks, but this is its first chart appearance, entering at #19.
Let's talk re-entries!...because there is quite a few this week. Leading the pack is Lizzo with "Good As Hell". After a week break from the chart, Lizzo is back at #15 with her surprise winter smash. "Good as Hell" previously peaked at #3 and has spent 8 non-consecutive weeks on the chart. Next up is Katy Perry with "Hey Hey Hey" - Perry is desperate for "Hey Hey Hey" to explode, to re-enter at #16 and previously peaking at #15 doesn't suggest great things. However, the song has now charted for 3 non-consecutive weeks, only 2 away from 'hit' status. Hailee Steinfeld, Alesso, Florida George Line and watt are back with "Let Me Go" at #17 - the song's 7th week on the chart. Finally, Demi Lovato is back with "Tell Me You Love Me" at #18. The song previously peaked at #8 in August, and this is also actually the song's first chart appearance since then too (3 weeks in total). "Tell Me You Love Me" wasn't exactly the follow-up to "Sorry Not Sorry" that Demi was hoping.
This week also marks a year of recorded charts on CrownNote. This week last year, Ed Sheeran topped the chart with "Castle on the Hill". Similarities are: a Fifty Shades song (I Don't Wanna Live Forever/For You), songs from a movie musical (La La Land/The Greatest Showman), Selena Gomez (Kill Em With Kindness/Wolves, Bad Liar) and Hailee Steinfeld (Starving, Love Myself/Let Me Go).
