Chart

James' Top 70 - January 5, 2017

First chart of 2017!

Notes:

  • "Love Like We Used To" becomes the first #1 of 2017, as it stretches its lead to 12 weeks now. Next week could be the first week it drops from the #1 spot as there are two new challengers looking to swoop in. Next week's Top 3 should be close.
  • COIN enters the Top 10 this week, going 16-6 for a new peak. "Talk Too Much" has been flying up the charts and is in position to take #1 next week. It's been three months since the last new #1, so anything will be a welcome addition. This is a lock for the Top 3 next week.
  • Acceptance also enters the Top 10 this week with "Diagram of a Simple Man" rising 11-9 for a new peak. This is another top prospect, and this one looks like it could go #1 in the future. Their album Colliding by Design will be out in February, and that will probably be when it gets its real push to the top, if it doesn't do so before that date.
  • "Good News" continues a torrid climb, as it rises 24-13 for a new peak. This is also a top prospect, and it looks like it could be a future #1. This had a red hot week, as it came up on my shuffle a lot, so the exposure is nice for it. I expect "Talk Too Much", "Diagram of a Simple Man", and "Good News" to be three songs you should definitely look out for on my chart for the first half of the year.
  • The top debut this week goes to Artificial Pleasure, who debut their song "I'll Make It Worth Your While" at #58 this week. This one is a funky little track, and I could see this having a high ceiling. It has burn potential, but it also has flourishing potential. This is another to look out for.
  • As "Better Than Me" (#29) goes recurrent, David Cook is quick to follow it up with "I'm Gonna Love You" this week at #61. This track was one that I was highlighting as a potential huge hit on my chart back when Digital Vein was released, but its projections have been a bit down since. I passed it over for the third single in favor of "Better Than Me", but this should be a nice charter for David. He has probably been the biggest surprise in awhile, as "Criminals" (#3) was the third best performing song in 2016 on my chart, while "Better Than Me" was a moderate hit. This should do worse than "Criminals" (obviously), but this should perform on par with "Better Than Me". At least it'll do better than "Broken Windows", the second single that failed to chart.
  • I'm likely going to be stuck to picking single for Bad Suns, so I decided to make "Swimming in the Moonlight" the second single from Disappear Here. It re-enters the chart this week at #65, already setting a new peak. As long as an actual single doesn't get in the way, I could see this having a bright future. Probably not #1 worthy, but Top 20 is doable for right now.
  • Beyoncé surprisingly makes her chart debut as a main artist this week with "All Night" coming in at #69. I'm not entirely sure if she's charted on a feature, but she did have an uncredited feature on Coldplay's "Hymn for the Weekend" (#29). This one should be a small charter, probably peaking somewhere in the 50s.
