Chart

Joseph's Hit 40

This week's highest climber comes from Lady Gaga, who matches her chart peak with new single Perfect Illusion, the first release from her fourth solo album Joanne. It matches the #3 peak of previous lead single Applause, and is her fourth top 10 to date after jumping up 20 places after a #23 debut on less than 24 hours of availability last week! Gaga is yet to have a #1 single but her previous album ARTPOP hit the top spot on my album chart.

The highest new entry this week comes from electronic trio Years & Years, comprising of vocalist Olly Alexander, keyboardist Emre Türkmen and bass guitarist Mikey Goldsworthy. The trio have previously hit my top spot twice, with previous singles Shine and Eyes Shut, as well as top 10 hits in the form of Desire and King. New single Meteorite just misses the top 5 this week but achieves a respectable debut of #6. It is the second single from the Bridget Jones's Baby film soundtrack, with the first release Still Falling for You by Ellie Goulding living up to its title, down 9 places to #23 this week.

Also new in the top 10 is Matoma & Becky Hill's False Alarm. Norwegian DJ Matoma made his chart debut last month, alongside Danish singer Christopher on his single Take Me Back, which made it to #24. Becky Hill was my favourite contestant on The Voice series 1, and has had moderate success in my chart, including a top 15 with Oliver Heldens on Gecko (Overdrive) in 2014. False Alarm instantly does better for both artists, entering straight in at #7 and therefore giving them both their first EVER top 10. Interestingly: Becky and Oliver Heldens have actually had very similar chart histories to date - both having a #14 and a #7 hit (Last All Night peaked at #7 in 2014 for Heldens), although Becky also has her #30 hit Losing in between.

Also this week, we see the first multi-week #1 since Joel Adams in April, as Frenship & Emily Warren stay at #1 for a second week. Next week they have competition from Emeli Sandé, who debuts at #26 with new single Hurts after less than 24 hours of availability, so expect a huge climb next week!

Reaching new personal bests this week are Sia and Kendrick Lamar, who climb three spots to #2 with their collaboration The Greatest, as well as Daniel Skye (up 9-8 with Smile) and Rebecca Ferguson (up 22-15 with Bones), plus the aforementioned Matoma & Becky Hill. Tungevaag & Raaban make their chart debut at #29 with Beast, a collaboration with Isac Elliot. offaiah also makes his chart debut at #37 with Trouble, as does Taylor Henderson with Light Up the Dark at #40.

Interestingly, Dakota is new at #18 with her first solo single Long Hot Summer (also prompting this week's retro song), meaning she has outpeaked Jonas Blue's follow-up hit. They both charted at #10 with their Fast Car cover earlier this year, and Jonas' follow-up Perfect Strangers got no higher than #37.
