Earlier this year, Ariana Grande debuted and peaked at #2 with her comeback single “Yes, And?”. By no means a flop, the single did underperform when compared to previous lead singles “thank u, next” or “Positions”. The follow-up song “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” debuted lower than its predecessor, but has consistently improved each week, reaching a brand new peak at #2 this week. It is only blocked by Eurovision singer Joost with “Europapa”, which earns a fourth consecutive week atop my chart. It is already the longest-running Eurovision Number 1 and currently ranks as one of the Top 5 biggest Eurovision songs of all time. His reign is challenged though, with Ariana Grande aiming for her would-be tenth Number 1-hit to date.
Joe Keery, easily best known for his turn as Steve Harrington in the Netflix series Stranger Things, has last week earned the highest new entry with “End of Beginning”, under his alias Djo. This week, the nostalgic pop ballad soars all the way up to #4, earning him his breakout first Top 10-hit. His music has been compared to that of Tame Impala and Ariel Pink. He included it on his second EP Decide and recently went viral on TikTok. As a result, it has now entered charts in various countries, including the Billboard Hot 100. With this kind of momentum, #4 seems to be only a temporary peak.
Last year, Olivia Rodrigo followed up her debut album with Guts, a rock-inspired sophomore album. It was preceded by the Number 1-hit “Vampire” and followed by a string of Top 10-hits, including one soundtrack single for the new Hunger Games film. This week, Guts received a deluxe edition featuring the new single “Obsessed”. Another angst-induced pop rock song in the vain of “Bad Idea, Right?”. It earns the highest new entry of the week at #16, earning Olivia Rodrigo her landmark tenth Top 40-hit to date. It is also her tenth song to at least secure a Top 20-peak, with eight of ten tracks peaking in the Top 10 – an insane achievement considering her single run so far.
American newcomer Benson Boone made his debut earlier this year with “Beautiful Things”. With the song still in the Top 20, the singer already lines up his next big smash hit with “Slow It Down” at #20. Further down, Shakira debuts with “Puntería”, a collaboration with Cardi B and the lead single for her latest album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. The album also contains her last year’s hit with Bizzarap and her collaboration “TQG” with Karol G. Her cross-over with Cardi B opens at #30. Lastly, American country singer Dasha enters at #35 with the break-up song “Austin”. The song is already becoming a global hit, continuing the trend of cross-over country pop hits led by Noah Kahan and Luke Combs.
With the first quarter of 2024 over, I’ve decided to rank the biggest songs of this year so far. Breakout star Noah Kahan comes out on top with “Stick Season”. The folk cross-over song spent six weeks atop my chart and paved the way for his string of Top 10-singles. Kahan his collaboration “Homesick” with Sam Fender ranks as the third biggest song of 2024 so far. Dua Lipa comes in at second place with the triple-platinum “Houdini”, while her most recent Number 1-hit “Training Season” ranks eleventh on this list so far. Notably, Sophie Ellis-Bextor her 22-years-old “Murder on the Dancefloor” ranks fourth due to its inclusion in the major motion picture Saltburn. Roxy Dekker earns the biggest Dutch song of this year so far with the insanely catchy “Satisfyer”, the fifth biggest song overall. For a full ranking, check the list below this chart.
