Chart

British pop phenomenon Adele becomes the second artist in chart history to reach Number 1 with a James Bond-theme song, doing so with her newest release “Skyfall”, taken from the 007-film of the same name!

James Bond-films are always accompanied by a killer soundtrack, led by some of the biggest singing stars of all time. Since charting began in 1995, James Bond-theme songs have made regular appearances on the list. Scottish singer Sheena Easton was the first act to enter the list with a James Bond-song, doing so with “For Your Eyes Only” in early 1995, taken from the 1981-film of the same name. Tina Turner, however, scored the first certified hit with a James Bond-song, as her 1995-hit “GoldenEye” has peaked at Number 2 and was certified Platinum with over 65,000 points.

After Tina Turner’s success, more artists started scoring hit singles with James Bond-themes. Sheryl Crow shot to Number 2 with “Tomorrow Never Dies”, which went on to become her highest-scoring single on the list, and English grunge-band Garbage made chart history as their 1999-single “The World Is Not Enough” became the first Bond-song to peak at Number 1. With the turn of the millennium, Madonna and Chris Cornell scored Top 10-hits with their respective Bond-songs – “Die Another Day” and “You Know My Name”.

Adele now releases her rendition of a James Bond-song. “Skyfall” enters at Number 1, marking the second time a 007-theme crowns the list. The single is Adele her sixth chart-topper, following the massive multi-platinum hits “Chasing Pavements”, “Make You Feel My Love”, “Rolling in the Deep”, “Someone Like You” and “Set Fire to the Rain”. The newest “Skyfall” also marks the biggest opening week for a Bond-song, as the song enters at Number 1. The record was previously held by Sheena Easton’s “For Your Eyes Only”, which opened at Number 9.

All the James Bond-theme songs ranked according to points scored:

  1. “GoldenEye” by Tina Turner
  2. “The World Is Not Enough” by Garbage
  3. “Die Another Day” by Madonna
  4. “Tomorrow Never Dies” by Sheryl Crow
  5. “You Know My Name” by Chris Cornell
