Britney Spears fends off all competition and achieves her very first Number 1-hit with … Baby One More Time. The American teen singer is becoming a global phenomenon, as her first single tops almost every chart it enters. The single is already one of the biggest-selling songs of the year in the United States, while sales in Europe are skyrocketing. The success is aided by the controversial additional video clip, which featured Britney Spears in a revealing school uniform. Britney Spears fights off Toy-Box and Lenny Kravitz in her climb to the top.
The ladies of Destiny’s Child step into the Top 10 with Get on the Bus. The group has already entered the Top 10 with the Gold-certified hit single No, No, No, which featured Wyclef Jean. Destiny’s Child are now aided by Timbaland, for whom this is his first credited Top 10-hit. Get on the Bus is also an international success, especially throughout Europe. This week, Destiny’s Child newest release peaks at Number 10 this week.
Boyzone score the highest debut of the week. The group has already scored a long string of hits, starting with Love Me For a Reason all the way back in 1995. Soon, more successful singles followed, including Words and A Different Beat. The group scored their biggest hits last year with No Matter What, which became the boys’ first Number 1-hit and received a 3 x Platinum Certification.
The group now release When the Going Gets Tough, a cover of the 1985 original by Billy Ocean. The single is the theme song of the British 1999 Comic Relief telethon. Comic Relief has already proven to be a hit-spawning machine, as the charity is responsible for Who Do You Think You Are by the Spice Girls in 1997. Boyzone their new single debuts at Number 17 and promises to be another hit single. The single is Boyzone their seventeenth entry on this list.
