Céline Dion, Spice Girls and Madonna fight for Number 1; “Spice Up Your Life” goes 2 x Platinum

Céline Dion, the Spice Girls and Madonna all near each other in the race for this week’s Number 1-position. Céline Dion is once again the strongest contender, earning herself an eighth week above the list. She successfully prevents the Spice Girls from scoring a possible eighth Number 1-single, keeping them in second. Madonna slips one place, but still ranks third this week. There is not much difference between the three songs and all three acts could easily nab the top spot next week.

Cleopatra jump into the Top 10 with Cleopatra’s Theme. The single is the girls’ first entry in the Top 10. The girls debuted with their first album “Comin’ Atcha!” earlier this year, which spawned Cleopatra’s Theme as its lead single. The song became an immediate hit in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at Number 3 on the Official Charts. The lead single is gaining success in Europe as well. On this list, Cleopatra climb to Number 6 this week.

Destiny’s Child enter the Top 10 with No, No, No, which features Wyclef Jean on the remix. The girls of Destiny’s Child have been making music for a long time, but they are finally having their breakthrough with No, No, No. The single is climbing the European charts rapidly, whilst their eponymous debut album is selling well too. The song is Destiny’s Child their first Top 10-entry, whilst it is Wyclef Jean his second as a solo artist; Wyclef Jean entered the Top 10 before with Guantanamera last year. This week, the bouncy No, No, No peaks at Number 7.

Natalie Imbruglia scores the highest debut of the week. Natalie Imbruglia kickstarted her career with her cover of Torn, which became an enormous success upon release. The single spent two consecutive weeks at Number 1, received a Platinum Certification and accumulated over 78,000 points. Following such success is hard, but Natalie Imbruglia tries with Big Mistake. Boosted by the success of its predecessor, Natalie Imbruglia her newest single debuts at Number 20 this week.

The Spice Girls celebrate a 2 x Platinum-certification for their massive success Spice Up Your Life. The song served as the lead single of the girls’ sophomore album “Spiceworld”. The single shot straight to Number 1, where it spent seven highly successful weeks. The hit was the girls’ sixth consecutive chart-topper and became one of their biggest hits in their repertoire. As of this week, Spice Up Your Life has amassed over 120,000. Their best-scoring release to date remains to be Wannabe, which scored over 180,000 points and is certified Diamond.
