Dua Lipa moves into a second week at Number 1 with “Houdini”

Catch her or she goes! Dua Lipa enters a second consecutive week at Number 1 with “Houdini”. It’s the lead single for her upcoming third studio album and debuted atop the list last week with the biggest first-week figures of the year so far. The single is produced by Kevin Parker of Tame Impala. “Houdini” has become Lipa her twelfth record-equaling Number 1-hit to date, tying with the Spice Girls as the act with the most Number 1s of all time. The Spice Girls have solely held the record since 1997 when “Spice Up Your Life” became their sixth Number 1-hit. “Houdini” faces competition though, as Dutch duo Kevin & S10 move to second place with their rendition of “De Leven”. It becomes both artists their career best so far.

Another competitor joins the race for Number 1 – rapper Jack Harlow soars into the Top 10 with “Lovin’ On Me”. Ever since his breakout “What’s Poppin’” in 2020, he has been a major chart player in the US. He crossed over the following year with “Industry Baby” alongside Lil Nas X and had a viral streaming hit with “First Class” in 2022. The latter of the two heavily sampled Fergie’s classic “Glamorous”. He now repeats this formula with “Lovin’ On Me” which heavily samples the 1995 R&B track "Whatever (Bass Solique)" by Cadillac Dale. It has debuted at Number 1 in the United Kingdom and in second on the Billboard Hot 100. On my personal list, it peaks at #3 this week–earning him his second Top 10-hit.

Last year, American singer-songwriter Noah Kahan released his third studio album Stick Season. It’s a classic folk album, inspired by Sam Fender and Phoebe Bridgers. The album was very well received and helped establish a distinct fanbase. Then this year, its title track went viral on TikTok and became a big hit in the UK. It also reached Number 1 in Ireland. On my personal list, “Stick Season” now also moves up to #10, earning Kahan his very first Top 10-hit. He previously had a minor hit with Julia Michaels on “Hurt Somebody”, which stalled at #29 in 2018.

At the end of the summer, Tate McRae launched a memorable promotional campaign on TikTok for her new song “Greedy”. It surely paid off, as it became the biggest hit of the young Canadian so far. On this list, it spent six consecutive weeks at Number 1, becoming the longest-running chart-topper of 2023 so far. She now repeats the same TikTok campaign for her follow-up release “Exes”, taken from her third upcoming album Think Later. Its video clip has been very well received by fans, with many praising its references to Britney Spears’s classic “I’m A Slave 4 U” and Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty”. McRae has also performed on SNL last weekend, which helped her push “Greedy” into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Exes” was also performed live for the very first time. It now debuts at #20 on this chart, the highest debut of the week. It earns McRae her eleventh Top 40-hit.

Following his concert at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, British singer Bakar debuts at #30 with his viral hit “Hell N Back”. It marks his very first Top 40-entry. The single was originally released back in 2019. Further down, The Weeknd debuts with “Popular” taken from The Idol Soundtrack. It was released this summer to minor yet stable success. It initially failed to impact my chart, but debuts at #37 this week. It features pop icon Madonna, who earns her thirty-third Top 40-hit – and her second this year following “Vulgar” with Sam Smith. Mariah Carey spearheads the Christmas season as “All I Want For Christmas” re-enters the chart again at #39. It re-enters the list every year with varying results. Last year, the annual classic reached #5.
