Olivia Rodrigo claims a sixth non-consecutive week at Number 1 with “good 4 u” following a very close chart battle. The song is aided by the success of its parent album Sour and strong streaming numbers. It now ties with “drivers license” and Snelle & Maan their “Blijven Slapen” as the longest-running Number 1 of the year. Olivia Rodrigo, however, was nearly dethroned this week, as Dua Lipa and Antoon both charge towards Number 1. Both songs have strong streaming numbers and received playlisting, making them strong contenders for the top spot. As it stands, this week its Top 3 remains unchanged, with Olivia at Number 1 once more, Dua Lipa’s “Love Again” – which has spent its opening week atop the chart – steadily in second and Dutch newcomer Antoon only narrowly settles for the third position this week.
British singer-songwriter Mimi Webb finally enters the Top 10 with her breakout single “Good Without” this week. Following her graduation at Brighton Music College, the young star has been on a very steady climb to success, going viral on TikTok and scoring big streaming numbers on Spotify. On this chart, it took Mimi Webb some time to find her feet, but this week, “Good Without” finally jumps into the Top 10, peaking at Number 9. The song is very much a sleeper hit, as it took the song twelve weeks to break into Top 10. Mimi Webb her follow-up single “Dumb Love” is also on a steady rise, peaking at Number 22 this week.
Speaking of sleeper hits – “Afraid of the Dark” by the Dutch band Chef’Special might very well be the textbook definition. The song previously peaked at Number 30 earlier this year, before dropping off the chart entirely. This, however, was not the end, as “Afraid of the Dark” re-entered last week at Number 25 following an increase in streaming numbers. Its success continued this week, culminating in “Afraid of the Dark” finally peaking at Number 10, becoming Chef’Special their very first Top 10-hit in their nearly ten-year-old chart history.
The highest debut of the week is claimed by Doja Cat and The Weeknd with “You Right”, taken from the former’s new sophomore album titled Planet Her. Both artists are no strangers to success; Doja Cat has been steadily racking up Top 10-hits since her breakout Number 1-single “Say So” and The Weeknd was one of the highest-scoring artists of last year. Planet Her its lead single “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA peaked at Number 1 for three consecutive weeks and earned platinum status. Together, Doja Cat and The Weeknd are surely looking at another big hit to add to their collection. They are off to a great start already, as “You Right” debuts at Number 20.
Three other songs make their debut this week. British singer-songwriter and hit phenomenon Ed Sheeran enters at Number 26 with his comeback single “Bad Habits”. The new song marks his first solo release off an album in over four years. At Number 32, Eurovision-winners Måneskin enter with their cover of “Beggin’”, which they originally performed at Italy’s X Factor in 2017 and recently enjoyed newfound success on TikTok. The song was most notably covered in 2008 by Norwegian hip-hop band Madcon, whose version topped the charts for one week. At Number 39, RAYE debuts with “Call On Me”, the lead single of her upcoming debut album. The British singer-songwriter made headlines last week after she stated on Twitter that she's been "hiding my tears and my pain" as her label continues to hold back her debut album, despite her numerous Top 40-hits in the United Kingdom and impressive songwriting credentials.
To celebrate the release of “Bad Habits”, I decided to take a look at Ed Sheeran his highest-scoring hits on this chart. The Suffolk-born singer is one of the biggest recording artists of all time, having amassed over 3.9 billion streams in the United Kingdom alone. On this chart, Ed Sheeran has scored twenty-nine Top 40-hits, of which fourteen peaked inside the Top 10. His second studio album - X – spawned two Number 1s: “Sing” and “Thinking Out Loud”, of which the latter became his highest-scoring single on my chart. More success followed with his subsequent albums, including another chart-topping hit with “Castle On The Hill”. His more recent songs have failed to match the insane success of its predecessors on my list, but were worldwide million-sellers nonetheless. For the Top 10 highest-scoring Ed Sheeran songs on my chart, check the Top 10 below this list.
