Sabrina returns to Number 1 while Dua Lipa celebrates a triumphant Glasto uplift

Ahead of the summer, Sabrina Carpenter continues to dominate 2024. She returns to Number 1 again with the sun-kissed “Espresso”, notching up an eighth week at the top. “Please, Please, Please” briefly filled in at Number 1 for a single week, but now its back to that her “Espresso”, which earns a seventh non-consecutive week atop my chart. It is now the longest-running Number 1 of the year so far, a feat she previously shared with Eurovision-song “Europapa”. Sabrina Carpenter could have the biggest hit of the year on her hands, if she holds up. Without any major competition, her biggest threat chartwise is her own single “Please, Please, Please”.

In our day and age in which singles primarily target TikTok-virality and are often no longer than three minutes, it is refreshing to see a song cross the five minute mark. Enter Raye. Her smash Number 1-hit “Escapism” was a magnum opus that felt like multiple genres combined into one. It established her as an uncredited and viable solo act after years being stuck as a feature on David Guetta-esque songs. She now moves up to #8 with “Genesis”, which feels like an evolved “Escapism” in more ways than one. It is a seven-minute long opera that experiments with several genres including jazz, contemporary R&B, hip hop and pop. Ahead of her set at the Down The Rabbit Hole, it earns Raye her seventh Top 10-hit to date.

She comes and she goes! Dua Lipa headlined the iconic Glastonbury last weekend, bringing nightlife and club culture to the Pyramid stage with her string of hit singles. The set was met with rave reviews, with the obvious highlight being when Tame Impala joined Lipa onstage to sing “The Less I Know the Better”. Supported by this career highlight, all three Radical Optimism singles lift up or re-enter. Lead single “Houdini” – a seven-week Number 1 last year – re-enters this week at #19, while Number 1-hit “Training Season” re-enters at #27. The recent “Illusion” soars back up to #12, only barely missing out on the Top 10. Although the Radical Optimism era has received criticism online, on my own chart, it’s been another successful run for the British pop diva that is about to get even longer.

Camila Cabello has had an extraordinary week so far, in between releasing hr controversial new album C, XOXO and promoting its two singles, she has graced The Other Stage at Glastonbury. The live set, which featured Cabello spinning around on a merry-go-round, was well received by critics. Speaking off that new album, it might be one of the most dividing releases of the year already. Its lead single “I Luv It” was critically panned and the follow-up release “He Knows” underperformed despite a Lil Nax X-feature. She now teams up with, again a controversial figure: Drake. He has beefed with Kendrick Lamar over the past few weeks and was declared the loser. It’s unfortunate timing for Cabello, as the two collab on “Hot Uptown”, the biggest debut of this week, a low #29.

Only one other song enters my chart this week: “Girls” by The Kid LAROI. The Australian rapper-or-singer has some big hits under his belt already. His breakout “Without You” went to #2 supported by a remix featuring Miley Cyrus, while his collab “Stay” with Justin Bieber became a big Number 1. He now seems to step in Bieber’s footsteps somewhat, as “Girls” is a boyband-esque R&B-hit. It could be easily mistaken for a Journals-era single or an old NSYNC-hit. The song rounds out the Top 40 at #40 exactly, earning The Kid his fifth Top 40-entry.
