The Spice Girls set for a fifth week at Number 1 with the romantic 2 Become 1. This is their twenty-first week consecutive week above the list, following Wannabe and Say You’ll Be There. They have been dominating the list since August 1996. Céline Dion tries to break their reign with All By Myself at Number 2. The French-Canadian singer has already scored three Number 1s with Think Twice, Because You Loved Me and It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, now aiming for a possible fourth. The Spice Girls come out the strongest this week, maintaining their crown position.
Linda, Roos & Jessica score their third Top 10-entry with Lange Nacht. The Dutch girl group consists of actresses Babette van Veen, Guusje Nederhorst and Katja Schuurman, whom all play in the Dutch soap ‘Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden’. The girls scored a big hit with Ademnood, which spent six weeks at Number 1 and was certified 2 x Platinum. Their follow-up Alles of Niets also became a successful Top 10-hit. ‘Jessica’, played by Katja Schuurman, briefly left the group to pursue a solo career with the song Maar Nu Heb Ik Er Een, but that did not amount to much. Fully reunited, Linda, Roos & Jessica peak at Number 7 this week.
The Kelly Family score their first Top 10-entry with I Can't Help Myself (I Love You, I Want You). The Kelly Family sure is an odd one out, as the group consists of multi-generational family. The group has scored big hits in Germany, Portugal, the Benelux-countries and other European countries. Their signature-hit I Can't Help Myself (I Love You, I Want You) enters the list at Number 10 this week.
Guus Meeuwis and Vagant score the highest debut of the week. The Dutch band has already left a huge legacy on the list, whilst only having released one album. Their breakthrough-hit Het Is Een Nacht spent eight weeks at Number 1, was certified 5 x Platinum, and is currently the best-scoring singles of all time. Their follow-up Per Spoor (Kedeng Kedeng) also shot to Number 1; the hit spent five weeks above the list, was certified 2 x Platinum, and was the best-scoring single of 1996. To say they are a huge hit, would be an understatement. Their newest, bouncy single Verliefd Zijn begins at Number 18 this week.
