Chart

James' Top 70 - August 11, 2016

A NEW #1!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Notes:

  • Young The Giant overtake Cam!? "Something to Believe In" takes over in the top spot this week, finally putting an end to Cam's devouring. This has the potential to have a decent run at the top, as next week it will be aided by Home of the Strange, and potentially beyond. "Mayday" (1-2) should still hold strong in the Top 3 for a long time; it might turn into one of the best chart runs in history.
  • "Get You Home" enters the Top 10, going 11-8 for a new peak. This has a great rise the past few months, and it has been a very surprising charter. This was helped from the release of his album Hurricane, but it would have made the Top 10 this week regardless. This will try for the Top 5 next week.
  • "Brand New" finally debuts this week at #63. This one appeared on On the Rise one year and one week ago (August 5, 2015). It has appeared on and off through the past year, but it finally started to make some noise about a month ago with its rise on Hot AC / CHR (where sadly, it's done on both). I'm not too positive how far this will go considering I have been listening to it for a year, but I think it should probably chart until Ben announces another single ("Like the World is Going to End" please!). Ben has had past success on the chart with "When I'm With You" (#4), "Ordinary Love" (#6), "Beautiful" (#7), and "White Dress" (#15).
  • American Idol seems to still be running strong on my chart. On top of songs from Nick Fradiani, David Cook, and Hedley (from Canadian Idol #themoreyouknow), two moreIdol alums debut this week. Last year's winner Trent Harmon debuts with his debut single "There's A Girl" at #67. I didn't really envision him as a country artist, but the song is definitely good. There's seems to be a disconnect between him and the music (like Nick Fradiani kinda has), but it's still a good song. This should be a nice charter, maybe peaking somewhere in the 30s or 40s. Lauren Alaina, runner-up for season 10, debuts "Road Less Traveled" this week at #70. Her past single "Next Boyfriend" appeared on On the Rise quite a bit, but never charted. This has the potential to blossom into a big hit for her, but for now, this will be in the same boat as Trent.
  • As "Don't Let Me Down" (7-10) is starting to fall, The Chainsmokers quickly follow it up with "Closer", which debuts at #65 this week. This likely won't see the success that the former did, but it has some potential to it. I'm actually not completely sold on it yet, but it has grown on me quite a bit since I first listened to it. For now, a 40s or 50s peak is its ceiling.
  • Night Riots make their return to the chart with "Nothing Personal" at #69. They've seen the chart twice with "Contagious" (#15) and "Oh My Heart" (#11), and this will look to make its way up the charts to those positions. This is the first time for them to chart on the 70 position chart, as they did the previous two with 40 positions, but this has a shot to do just fine. Both of those hits were pretty fast climbers, but I see this one taking its time. This will likely turn into their longest charter if it can stay on the chart for a few weeks.
