It has been a troubled week in Spiceworld as Geri Halliwell decided to leave the Spice Girls. Geri Halliwell, also known as Ginger Spice, did not perform at the National Lottery Shows and during two concerts, causing the press to ask where Geri was. On the 31st of May, it was officially announced that Geri Halliwell has parted ways with the Spice Girls. Geri’s solicitor cited quarrels and stress were the reason of Geri’s departure. The remaining members Melanie C, Melanie B, Emma Bunton and Victoria Adams were adamant that the group would carry on and that their approaching North American tour would continue as normal, however, Halliwell's departure threw most of the group's plans into disarray. The group announced one last single will be released from the album “Spiceworld” and that they are working on a new album minus Ginger Spice.
Because of Geri Halliwell’s sudden departure, all the Spice Girls’ previous singles re-enter. The Spice Girls’ debut single Wannabe re-enters at Number 1, making it the first ever single to peak above the list non-consecutively. In total, the single has spent eleven weeks leading the list, amassed over 190,000 points and received a Diamond Certification. Wannabe holds as the best-scoring single of all time; a record they extend this week. The Spice Girls’ single dethrones Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams which spent one week crowning the list.
Furthermore, the Spice Girls take over the Top 10 with Say You’ll Be There, Who Do You Think You Are, Stop and Spice Up Your Life. All those singles previously peaked at Number 1 and are one of the best-scoring singles of all time. The girls’ Stop is one of the more recent hits and spent two weeks above the list a few months ago. Additionally, the previous chart-toppers 2 Become 1, Too Much and Mama re-enter the Top 20. In total, the Spice Girls hold eighth places in the Top 40 this week, which is a new record.
Aside from all the Spiceworld madness, Ultimate Kaos steps into the Top 10 with Casanova. Ultimate Kaos is a British boyband formed by music mogul Simon Cowell, which found success earlier with hits such as Some Girls, following their support to Take That on their 1994 UK tour. The group now make an international breakthrough with Casanova, which is a cover of the original by LeVert in 1987. This week, Ultimate Kaos make their Top 10-debut, climbing up to Number 8 this week.
Amongst all the re-entries, Brandy and Monica score the highest new debut of the week. Both R&B-singers have entered the list before with small successes, including Sittin' Up in My Room by Brandy and For You I Will by Monica. Brandy and Monica now collaborate with The Boy Is Mine, which is a soft R&B-ballad about two girls fighting over the same man. The song is rapidly climbing the worldwide charts. On this list, Brandy and Monica debut at Number 13 this week.
LeAnn Rimes receives a Platinum Certification for her Number 1-hit How Do I Live. The single spent three consecutive weeks above the list and is one of the biggest hits of this year. Across the globe, the single is also a big success. In America, it is one of the longest-running singles on the Billboard 100. As of this week. How Do I Live has amassed over 65,000 points.
Finally, the Spice Girls achieve yet another feat this week as Stop is certified Platinum. The song was the girls’ eighth consecutive Number 1-hit and spent two weeks crowning the charts. The song is the girls’ eighth hit to receive a Platinum Status. Stop now enters its tenth week within the Top 10. As of this week, the incredibly catchy hit has amassed over 65,000 points.
