We had an exciting chart this week as both Halsey and Lady Gaga attempted to dethrone Dua Lipa & Silk City from the spot. By the end of the week, both Halsey and Lady Gaga (and Bradley Cooper) had moved ahead of "Electricity". Unfortunately for Halsey, Emm!e and Emily just couldn't make up for the hype surrounding A Star Is Born, giving "Shallow" the #1. This is both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's first #1. "Without Me" is Halsey's highest charting single. Lady Gaga also scores a 2nd top five with "I'll Never Love Again," the tearful finale ballad which debuts at #4.
Elsewhere in the top ten, we see Dinah Jane inch up to #7. Could she become the 2nd Fifth Harmony member to get a #1 after Camila Cabello with "Havana" a year ago? Jess Glynne also gets a 3rd straight top ten with "123" as Josh, Celina, and Emily all purchase tickets to her Boston show in April. LANY makes another attempt at the top ten, only to fall short at #12. Could next week be their week or will A Star Is Born continue to block them?
Speaking of A Star Is Born, the soundtrack got 6 chart entries this week and should only gain momentum as more people in Braintree see the film. This is definitely the most successful soundtrack since The Greatest Showman back in January. Another major debut is the Charli XCX & Troye Sivan single, "1999" that preys on millennial nostalgia. It is definitely a contendet to be Charli's 2nd #1 after "Boys" and Troye's 3rd after "My My My!" and "Bloom" earlier this year.
Emm!e contributed to Halsey's major jump to #2 this week as she spun her girl all week and made her Most Played. Daina didn't do much but did raid the Braintree Top 40 and cherrypicked songs she felt deserved the title of "refined taste" which included "Happier, " Youngblood" and "Moves". Celina merely listened to the Braintree Top 40 while Emily deviated from the BT40 a bit. She also contributed to Halsey's #2 as well as the debut of "5 dollars" after peaking at #2 on the Bubbling Under last week. Breagh, Catie, and Sara all failed to influence the chart.
Next week, we see the MAJOR release of Little Mix's single, "Woman Like Me" featuring Nicki Minaj that is sure to battle for the top spot. We also see releases from Astrid S, Shawn Mendes and the new Jess Glynne album! As the new releases pile up, not all of them can go #1. Which ones will rise to the top and which will fail to meet expectations? Find out next week on the Braintree Top 40!
Here is this week's Bubbling Under:
1. Lady Gaga - Look What I Found
2. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - I Don't Know What Love Is
3. Lady Gaga - La Vie En Rose
4. Bradley Cooper - Maybe It's TIme
5. Anderson .Paak - Tints (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
