the cm70 - March 31, 2016

Cam breaks more records, scores her first #1, and is looking at a second consecutive next week.

On top of two Cam debuts, there's a Top 5 debut, and two more debuts!

Notes:

  • Cam earns herself her first #1 with "Burning House", as it climbs 8-1. This will likely be its only week at the top as "Mayday" is more than likely going to take over next week. This was more put to #1 just to give Cam two #1s in a row/this era. This knocks "The Driver" to #2 from the top, as it spends just a week at #1.
  • As Cam owns the top spot, she also runs into the Top 3 with "Mayday" making another big blast, as it goes 22-3 (19 positions) for a new peak. Next week it will more than likely go #1, but beyond that might actually be questionable. Last week, it looked like it could be on top with no competition for a month or so, but now there's a Top 5 debut that wants to put a stop to that.
  • Fitz & The Tantrums make their chart debut with a bang this week, as "HandClap" comes in white hot at #4 this week. It put up an astounding 61 plays in its debut week, and in a different competition, this likely would have debuted at #1. This and "Mayday" will likely be huge competitors in the top spots for the next month or so, but this has the upperhand in longevity, but at the moment, "Mayday" should be #1 if we're talking about here and now. This comes as an even bigger surprise considering I have never really liked any of their songs besides "Fools Gold". I even despised "The Walker" and that was one of my least favorite songs of its respective year. With that said, I absolutely love this. I think this could be this year's "My Type".
  • "Beautiful Drug" continues its lengthy run on the chart, as now it climbs back up 20-16 for a new peak. This one has been pretty up and down its entire run, with a few hot streaks in, but this continues to climb. It'll try and get Zac Brown Band their third Top 10 hit from Jekyll + Hyde, but it's going to be a very tough task. They're also looking for another song to chart, as "Castaway" finds itself on On the Rise this week. If it is indeed the next single, it should be able to chart soon, but probably the worst of the singles.
  • "Run or Hide" climbs into the Top 20 as it goes 21-18 for a new peak. Run River North was killing it a month ago and has seemingly passed the torch onto Cam, but this continues to do well. This should hit Top 10 without a doubt in the future, probably in a few weeks. Its chances at going #1 are dwindling down, but this seems like it might have some longevity and could potentially do it after the chaos simmers down.
  • Chris Lane enters the Top 30 with "Fix" going 36-30 for a new peak. This continues to climb up and is looking like a safe bet for a Top 10 hit. Like "Run or Hide", its chances of #1 have gone down, and this likely won't reach the top. I can see this being a high burner, so it's going to have to take control of its opportunities, which it has thus far.
  • "My Type" spends its 52nd week on the chart this week! This one has been falling down a bit for the past few weeks, though it stays steady at #35 this week, and it might not reach 60 weeks. This is now the 4th song that has been on the chart for a year, and there are two more looking to follow suit ("End of the World" and surprisingly "Criminals") in a few months.
  • 3OH!3 enter the Top 40 with "MAD AT YOU" going 42-38 for a new peak. This is going to turn out a big hit for them and probably an eventual Top 10 hit. It has the makings of a song I wouldn't like, but for some reason, 3OH!3 has been knocking out of the park for me for this era. They also debut their third song from NIGHT SPORTS, "BASMF" at #70. That will more than likely be a one-weeker, but this could be a surprisingly good era for them. I plan on at least streaming the album when it comes out in May, and there is a weird shot I might buy it?
  • Cam keeps up her hot streak, as "My Mistake" and "Cold In California" take big climbs into the Top 50, as they go 57-43 and 54-47 respectively. "My Mistake" might actually turn into a Top 10 hit, while "Cold In California" should hit the Top 40. I've been loving "My Mistake" a lot with each listen, and in return, it should be a sticking album track.
  • Charles Kelley puts his third song in the Top 50, as now "Lonely Girl" goes 55-50 for a new peak. This is the official second single from The Driver, so this should get its recognition now, even with "The Driver" at #2, and "Dancing Around It" just below the Top 10 (14-11). Unlike those two, this should take its time to peak, and there is an outside shot of Top 10 for it, but it will probably do the worst of the three unless something unforeseen happens.
  • "LA Confidential" flies into the Top 60, as it goes 62-53 for a new peak. This had a hot week and definitely kickstarted the song. This could be a hit, but for now, it looks like a minor hit.
  • Nick Jonas debuts at #58 this week with "Close", which features Tove Lo. Nick has had some minor hits on the chart, but he hasn't had anything real big. "Good Thing" (w/ Sage the Gemini) is his only Top 10 hit, but he was a feature on it (a prominent feature to say the least though). I'm not sure how well this will do since I'm not completely sold on it, but it should be a Top 40 hit at least. This is also Tove Lo's return to the chart. "Moments" went recurrent awhile ago, and this should be a nice placeholder until her album comes out.
  • Hedley debuts their follow-up to "Hello" (10-13) with "Lose Control" entering the chart at #62. This has a good shot at doing as well as "Hello", which peaked at #3, but this should take its time moving up. It could get some hot movement for awhile at some point, but it won't be the majority of its climb.
  • And let's end on Cam again! As all the songs she debuted last week climb up and gain new peaks, she also debuts two more with "Village" and "Country Ain't Never Been Pretty" at #66 and #67 respectively. With this, Cam now breaks another record! She is the first artist in chart history to debut a full album on the chart. Now obviously, it's a tad bit easier than it was, say, 8 years ago when the chart was incepted, but it's still an incredible feat. Nickelback (Dark Horse & No Fixed Address), Until the Ribbon Breaks (A Lesson Unlearnt), Big Data (2.0), and most recently Run River North (Drinking from a Salt Pond) have all nearly done it, but never accomplished it. Nickelback nearly did it when the charts were just Top 20s at their album releases, so they likely would have gotten it in 40 & 70 (probably Until the Ribbon Breaks and Big Data too), but let's not take this away from Cam! Back on Cam, her album has a good shot at sticking next week, but there is a shot some songs fall if there are songs that are trying to debut. There's not really many songs trying super hard, except for a Jason Derulo debut next week if he releases his song, but Cam won't be the first to fall. Next week should be another interesting week for Cam.
