The throne of Brandy and Monica is becoming unstable, as Des’ree threatens to overtake the duo in the race for this week’s Number 1. Nonetheless, Brandy and Monica achieve a fifth week above the list with The Boy Is Mine. The single is becoming one of the best-scoring releases of the year. Both girls announced more singles would be released soon, following the success of their collaboration. Des’ree does come close this week, almost dethroning the girls’ duet. If Des’ree were to crown the list the following week with Life, it would be her first chart-topper on this list.
Billie Piper steps into the Top 10 with Because We Want To. Billie Piper is a young singer from England who is currently becoming one of the UK’s biggest stars. Her single entered the Official UK Singles Chart at Number 1 earlier this month, making Billie Piper the youngest artist ever to debut above the list, aged 15 years old. Because We Want To is becoming Billie Piper her breakthrough hit on this list as well, rapidly climbing to Number 5 this week. The single marks her first entrance in the Top 10.
The Vengaboys enter the Top 10 with We Like to Party! (The Vengabus). It has been a widely successful year for the Vengaboys, as the group scored international hits with 2 Brazil and Up & Down. The Vengaboys are especially successful in the United Kingdom, where they recently landed the Top 10. The group originally hails from the Netherlands, where they are a massive sensation as well. On this list, the group scored their first Top 10-hit with Up & Down, which amassed over 50,000 points and is still charting. The Vengaboys now score their second Top 10-entry with We Like to Party!, climbing to Number 10.
B*Witched score the highest debut of the week. B*Witched is an Irish girl group consisting of twin sisters Edele and Keavy Lynch, Lindsay Armaou and Sinéad O'Carroll. The girls are currently becoming the latest pop sensation, climbing the European countries rapidly with their debut single C’est La Vie. The single was already a Number 1-hit in the United Kingdom, where it is also one of the most successful singles of this year. The group now make their debut on this list as well, entering with C’est La Vie at Number 19.
