It's a Eurovision Song Contest 2024 Effervescence Takeover this week.
We're here again! It's time for another chapter to be written in the most bizarre, astonishing, over-the-top, and hilariously incomprehensible show of the year.
I'm publishing this week's chart a little early as the first of the two semi-finals will take place Tuesday (May 7th) and we need to lock it in to avoid the temptation to make any changes as the songs begin to get eliminated. In a small attempt to explain my logic here on how this is compiled - this is who I want to win. This means that they are not necessarily my order of favorites ('We Will Rave' is almost easily my favorite track). The winner is one of Croatia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Italy, or the Netherlands with Greece in there somewhere. If I got my way, Ireland is taking it though the Top 10 is likely the best expectation. Doomsday Blue is just too rare and special an occurrence not to get my unbridled support. It just keeps getting more and more anticipated for me #CrownTheWitch ! I am absolutely in favor of a Croatia win too!
The Final takes place on Saturday, May 11th. To celebrate the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, here are my picks for all 37 songs competing this year. For the remaining positions, I have picked out three tracks I think are relevant this year. These songs are Abba's royalty-level Eurovision classic 'Waterloo' which celebrates 50 years this year! Loreen's 'Tattoo' which was of course last year's winner, and finally Molly Sandén, who was the voice behind the female vocals used in the 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' movie, and her new single which is aptly a cover of another Abba classic -'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)'.
Effervescence will be back to business as usual next week though Eurovision's big achievers and best-performances are reasonably likely to stick around another few weeks yet!

Ahoy, Cheese!
I think the entire field is pretty strong this year and will give us three great party shows! As is pretty evident, ballads generally just ain't my thing.
I am highly anticipating 'Doomsday Blue' in Semi 1 later. From what I am hearing it's going to be an absolute spectacle!
Thank you for stopping by and for your comment.
Happy Eurovision Week!

Hi there Maxon!
Sorry I couldn't comment early, the top 10 looks nice!
For me, my top 5 favourites would be: Croatia, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and a toss-up between Austria/Cyprus/Ukraine and Ireland.
Great list for you, can't wait for Eurovision to infect both of our charts.
Happy Eurovision week!

Ahoy, Sergej!
There is no need to apologize. You do what you do when you do it. This is hardly the platform for anyone to expect anything from anyone, ha!
I'll definitely be checking back over the next day or two to see SPC infested with a strong scent of ESC! I know what you're saying about a toss-up between three tracks to get your #5, it's been a year a bit like that where tracks we like are lower than we thought they were when we get down to it. Even in the contest itself. Sad to see 'The Tower' fall last night. The staging was wacky Eurovision at its finest but we move on. Let's see how my girl, Kaleen, gets on tomorrow. I just want to see it get through.
Can't get much more infected than Effervescence is this week for the Eurovision tracks can it? I'm excited to see how the big performances affect where everything shakes out next week though. Currently, (8 days before the new chart) it's looking like a three-way race between Baby Lasagna, Bambie Thug, who were both incredible last night, and a returning Sabrina for the top spot!
Thank you for stopping by and commenting!
Happy Eurovision Week right back at ya!

Hey Maxon! :)
Interesting to see Eurovision have this much dominance in your charts before the final, especially 'Doomsday Blue' at #1.
Good chart!

Thanks for the comment, Piran.
It seems around here I am in the minority as many let the contest pass before adding the songs to their charts. Fair enough, it's the way the official charts tend to operate too. However, I have been following the genesis of all of this year's contest from France dropping their entry back in November all the way through to the dress rehearsals this week. Therefore these songs have been an increasing presence on my music for many months already. The Grand Final tomorrow is the culmination of the season for me, not the beginning. This week's chart has all of them in it - next week will have considerably less as my other music re-enters and we begin to move on.
The Semi-Finals this week have been a joy to watch as dreams have both been made and shattered. I am very concerned about a movement of hate and evil as people are just voting for Israel regardless of performance or song. This paired with many of the usual voting public boycotting the contest/vote due to Israel's presence which means there is a very real possibility that Israel may win. This is crushing for several reasons - the overbearing political nature of it. I know there's always a degree of politicized voting but this is going to another level. Israel should always have been excluded during this time. Their song is fine but it's not winning for that reason. If they win, the final traditionally would be in Israel next year. This could kill Eurovision - all the other countries will leave in protest. They would have every right to but that is such a miserable thought being as it is supposed to and does bring about months of great joy for me. It would really leave a hole in my calendar for me. [I've already thought of the possibility of a Croatia holiday for the contest next year!]
I'll say now if Croatia wins - 'Rim Tim Tagi Dim' is easily my #1 next week, maybe 2 weeks as I ride that high of triumph over absurdity. If Israel wins - I will likely eject all Eurovision songs from the chart, leave it behind, and just reset for Summer Season as I attempt to maintain my degree of positivity and happiness.
Quick note on 'Doomsday Blue'. I watched Bambie Thug win the nomination at Eurosong 2024 back in January. It's been an epic journey as the artist wants to be different and hates being labeled as any specific genre. 'Doomsday Blue' is no exception - the track is bonkers. The artistry in not only the music but the staging, visuals, and story as well as the execution of the track on the Eurovision stage is incredibly special to me and far from the type of thing we traditionally see each year in the contest. It is a work of art and as every little piece of the story on the journey from Eurosong to the Eurovision Song Contest grand final has played out I have been entertained, amazed, and honored to be present for the achievement. It is now my personal choice for the best track this year. I don't think it will win but whatever it achieves is a roaring and unexpected success from where we were in January.
I apologize for the essay. Have an awesome time at the Olivia Rodrigo gig tonight. I look forward to seeing how the Final goes down for you and which tracks work their way into your Top 50 next week!
